Luca Agnelli Gives Us The Lowdown On Tuscan Wines
Luca Agnelli is one of the most renowned Italian DJ’s. Recognised for his powerful and energetic sets, hard techno is his sound, but you can also see his house and techno roots in many of his productions. Also the founder of his label Etruria Beats since 2010, they have unleashed music from Alignment, Nico Moreno, Oguz, Farrago and so many more.
After releases of his own on label including NineTimesNine, Reckless, Soma, No Mercy and Blackworks, he made his debut on Indira Paganotto’s ARTCORE in May, with his latest EP ‘Game Over.
The globe trotting Italian is a passionate wine lover and was good enough to give us his lowdown on Tuscan wines.
My Tuscany is a land of wine, the most famous ones, such as Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Masseto, Tignanello and Solaia, are known throughout the world. However, Tuscany offers many exceptional wines, each with a unique history and distinctive character that deserves to be discovered. I will tell you about my personal selection of Tuscan wines, those that struck me with their quality, authenticity and ability to convey the essence of our land.
Moro Rosso (Il Palazzo)
Moro Rosso is a robust and structured wine, produced by the Il Palazzo winery, located in the heart of Tuscany and more precisely in Arezzo, near my home! This red wine, with its notes of ripe berries, spices and a touch of liquorice, is perfect to crown my barbecues with friends, with the “Bistecca Chianina”, ribs and sausages that I grill myself!
Grape variety: Merlot, Sangiovese, Syrah
Argentiera (Argentiera)
Argentiera is a Bolgheri DOC Superiore wine, elegant and sensual, the most attentive can perceive its aromas of berries and plums, but also cocoa and toasted coffee. Every summer, when I go to the seaside with my family, it is always magical to go to the refined cellar in Castagneto Carducci, where it is grown and produced, to stock up for my annual supply. I particularly appreciate it with tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms and Chianina tartare.
Grape variety: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc.
Fortuni (Podere Fortuna)
Fortuni is a fine and elegant wine which in my opinion embodies the excellence of the Mugello land. I discovered it when I lived in Borgo San Lorenzo, right near the Podere vineyards and I immediately fell in love with it. With hints of small red fruits and currants, but there are also floral and spicy hints.
Perfect for the potato tortelli typical of that area, made strictly by hand, with meat sauce; also very suitable with baked sea bass.
Grape variety: Pinot Noir.
Il Pino (Tenuta di Biserno)
Il Pino is a very charming ruby red wine, produced in Bibbona, near Bolgheri. With aromas of red berries, cherry, myrtle and toasted notes given by the wood. I discovered this masterpiece at the Enoteca Tognoni of Bolgheri, a regular stop when I’m in the area. Perfect for tagliatelle with wild boar sauce, but also for a “tagliata” with rosemary.
Grape variety: Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot.
Paleo Rosso (Le Macchiole)
Paleo Rosso is a great symbolic wine of the Bolgheri winery Le Macchiole, which I had the pleasure of visiting in the various production phases and tastings.You can breathe the culture and professionalism in producing wines of great character. It is a bold and sensorial wine, with notes of blackberries, raspberries, liquorice and a touch of rosemary; white pepper, eucalyptus and tobacco can be perceived on the nose. I savour it on special occasions, with succulent dishes, delicious wild meats, fine parmesan cheeses.
Grape variety: Cabernet Franc
