After years of releasing a steady stream of forward-thinking techno and electro, LA-based DJ and producer Pilo is set to unveil his long-awaited debut album, G.L.A.M., on Boysnoize Records, out on November 8th, 2024.
Pilo dives into the inspirations that shaped his artistic journey, particularly the allure of the early 2000s electroclash movement. The album opens with “Superstar DJ,” expressing this idealised fantasy, channelling the tongue-in-cheek self-celebritising of Miss Kitten and The Hacker’s seminal work. G.L.A.M. transitions into “Girls Rule The World,” characterised by its aggressive, droning bassline and infectious hook, making it an ideal electroclash anthem for anyone plotting revenge on an ex. Following this, “What You Want” presents an instrumental showcase where Pilo demonstrates that synthesisers have taken the place of traditional guitars, skillfully bending and distorting sounds into a previously uncharted sonic territory.
“Loverboy” shifts into a more melodic and Legowelt-inspired electro style, elevating the foundational elements of analog minimalism with intricate sound design that creates both climactic and cathartic moments. The title track, “G.L.A.M.,” features Scopa’s coldwave-inspired vocal delivery, enhanced by Pilo’s inventive vocal processing and FX techniques that transform these effects into instruments of their own. While Sana and DEEVIOUS bring a sultry, seductive energy to “Spend The Night,” a pop-driven highlight. Closing with “One Last Embrace,” Pilo pushes his engineering into psychoacoustic territory, as this eerie, beautiful melancholy track explodes into a thrashing bassline that warbles like a drowning memory, struggling against the sinking weight of time.
As with Pilo’s career, each ending opens a new door, leaving listeners eager to see what comes next. G.L.A.M. is a triumph for Pilo, showing off his deep understanding of electro, his technical mastery, and his ability to blend nostalgia with innovation.
